What is FASTag?

FASTag is a reloadable RFID sticker affixed to the windscreen of your vehicle. As you pass through a FASTag lane at a toll plaza, the toll amount is automatically deducted from your prepaid wallet or linked bank account β€” no stopping, no cash.

Issued by 32+ banks and the NHAI iHMCL program, it works across all National Highways and many State Highways.

Insider Knowledge

Expert Highway Travel Tips

From seasoned road-trippers and logistics professionals β€” tips that save you time, money, and stress on India's highways.

πŸ’°

Keep FASTag Balance β‚Ή500+

Low balance causes tag to go into "yellow" (insufficient) mode. Maintain at least β‚Ή500 to avoid lane rejection and fines. Set auto-recharge reminders on your bank app.

Money Tip

πŸ•

Avoid 6 AM – 9 AM at Major Tolls

Peak commuter hours cause queues even in FASTag lanes near metros. Plan to cross Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru ring-road tolls before 6 AM or after 10 AM for a breeze.

Time Tip

πŸ—ΊοΈ

Use NHAI OneMap for Tolls

Before any long trip, visit the official NHAI OneMap portal to calculate total toll cost route-wise. Export the list to avoid surprises. Google Maps toll estimates are often outdated.

Route Tip

πŸ“‹

Dispute Wrong Deductions

If charged incorrectly (blacklisted tag, wrong vehicle class), call 1033 (NHAI helpline) within 72 hours. Keep your FASTag transaction ID from the SMS as proof.

Legal Tip

πŸš›

Truck Owners: Use Fleet Card

Commercial fleet operators with 10+ vehicles should switch to NHAI Fleet Card for bulk recharge discounts, centralised billing and detailed MIS reports β€” saves 5–8% monthly.

Fleet Tip

Screenshot Your KYC

Always complete full KYC on your FASTag issuer app. Unverified FASTags have a monthly recharge cap of β‚Ή10,000 and may be suspended during NHAI audits. KYC takes under 5 minutes.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common FASTag, Annual Pass and highway toll queries in India.

Yes. FASTag became mandatory on all National Highway toll plazas on 16 February 2021 for all M and N category motor vehicles. Vehicles without a valid FASTag are charged double the toll fee at hybrid lanes (the only lane available to them).

No. Each FASTag is linked to a single vehicle registration number (VRN). Using one FASTag on multiple vehicles is illegal and results in blacklisting of the tag. You must obtain a separate FASTag for each vehicle.

An Annual Toll Pass (or Monthly Pass) is a prepaid subscription linked to your FASTag for a specific toll plaza. Once purchased, you can cross that plaza unlimited times during the validity period without additional deductions per trip. It's ideal for daily commuters who cross the same plaza repeatedly.

If your balance is insufficient, the RFID reader at the toll will detect the low balance and your tag will read as "yellow" (insufficient). You'll be diverted to the hybrid/cash lane and charged the normal single-trip cash toll amount. No penalty is applied for low balance β€” only if you have no FASTag at all is the 2Γ— penalty levied.

Call NHAI Helpline 1033 (24Γ—7) or your FASTag-issuing bank's customer care. Provide the transaction ID from your SMS alert. Most disputes are resolved within 7–10 working days. You can also raise a complaint via the iHMCL portal or My FASTag app.

Yes. Exempt categories include defence / paramilitary vehicles on duty, ambulances, vehicles carrying the President, Governor or Chief Justice, fire brigade and police vehicles on emergency duty. Additionally, local residents living within 20 km of a toll plaza can apply for a subsidised Local Resident Pass.

No. An Annual or Monthly Pass is plaza-specific. It is not transferable to a different toll plaza or vehicle. If you change your commute route, you need to purchase a new pass for the relevant plaza. Unused days are also non-refundable on most passes.
