What Is FASTag and How Does It Work?

FASTag is an RFID-based electronic toll-payment tag fixed to a vehicle's windscreen. At an enabled toll plaza, the reader identifies the tag and the applicable toll is processed through the account or wallet linked to that FASTag. IHMCL implements the FASTag programme for the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways/NHAI, with NPCI providing clearing and settlement services.

1. Tag is scanned

The RFID reader detects the FASTag fixed on the windscreen.

2. Vehicle is identified

The tag is associated with the registered vehicle and vehicle class.

3. Toll is processed

The applicable toll transaction is processed electronically through the linked FASTag account.

One Vehicle, One FASTag

Only One Active Tag

Under the One Vehicle One FASTag concept, one vehicle should have only one active FASTag. IHMCL says FASTags linked to the same vehicle other than the latest active tag are deactivated.

Recharge Is Flexible

One Vehicle One FASTag does not mean you must use only one bank for recharge. IHMCL says recharge can be made through supported methods such as BBPS, UPI and net banking.

Can I move my FASTag to another vehicle?

No. FASTag is issued against a particular vehicle using its registration details. A tag issued for one vehicle should not be used on another vehicle.

FASTag Status, KYC and Validity

IHMCL says the physical FASTag has a validity of five years. During that period, users generally recharge or top up according to usage, subject to issuer-account requirements and the tag remaining active.

Why Is My FASTag Blacklisted?

A blacklisted FASTag is blocked by the issuer and cannot be used for toll payment until the underlying issue is resolved. IHMCL lists insufficient balance as one possible reason and also notes violations such as vehicle/tag class mismatch or non-affixation of the FASTag on the windscreen.

Low Balance

Recharge and contact the issuing bank if the tag remains blocked.

Class Mismatch

Vehicle and tag-class information must match the registered vehicle.

Tag Not Affixed

The FASTag should be properly affixed to the vehicle windscreen rather than carried loose.

Eligible exempted categories use a dedicated IHMCL process. The application involves registration, selection of the exemption category and NHAI Regional Office, vehicle details and supporting documents.
